Unity Groups
Most Americans’ closest relationships still don’t reflect the diversity of the country around them. Two-thirds of White Americans and nearly half of Black Americans report entirely same-race friendship networks — and Hispanic and Asian American Pacific Islander Americans report similar patterns within their own communities. This gap is what birthed the idea of diverse Unity Groups.
Research consistently shows that real, sustained relationships across racial and ethnic lines — not just proximity — reduce prejudice, build empathy and trust, and shift what feels normal within a community. Unity Groups are the foundation of Unity in Community. Made up of 8-12 multiracial individuals, they meet at least once a month to build the kind of relationships that turn understanding into action — reflecting our pillars of engagement, education, advocacy, and collaboration.

Action Committees
EDUCATION COMMITTEE
- Creates and provides opportunities to help Supporters and the community at-large grow in our understanding of racism, racial equity, white privilege, and social justice.
- Enables Supporters to have respectful/authentic race related conversations with family and friends; equips members to engage in their communities, houses of worship, and organizations; and empowers them to be agents of change.
- Develops curriculum designed to enhance Unity Groups’ understanding of racism, racial equity, white privilege, black oppression, and social justice.
SOCIAL JUSTICE COMMITTEE
- Supports voter education and Get Out The Vote (GOTV) activities.
- Engages with local government to advocate on behalf of marginalized communities in our area.
- Supports the preservation of historically Black neighborhoods in our communities.
COMMUNICATION COMMITTEE
- Keeps Supporters informed about UiC activities and opportunities, such as Unity Session meetings, Unity Group meetings, events, as well as local/state/national news and matters of interest related to race.
- Manages UiC’s social media presence, website, and newsletter/email updates to keep the community engaged and informed.
- Handles media and press relations, and promotes Unity in Community in the community.
SUPPORTER COMMITTEE
- Responsible for Unity Group operations, including new Supporter orientation and training.
- Assigns new Supporters to Unity Groups.
- Provides Unity Group facilitator training.
- Conducts evaluations of Unity Groups to assess best practices that can be shared among all Unity Groups.
Unity in Community doesn’t identify as a faith-based group, but we find truth in the saying “Love your neighbor as yourself.” You can’t truly love someone you don’t know — so we start by getting to know one another. That understanding builds trust, trust builds love, and where there is love, justice is possible.
