Our nation’s history tells the story of a people striving to be more fair and just. It's the story of generations standing up and pushing against the status quo. It’s the story of individuals who believed that all citizens had a responsibility to guide the direction of this fine nation. And it’s the story of a hard-fought-for right that, even today, deserves and requires our attention. That right is the right to vote.
If you question whether or not your vote matters. If you feel uninspired by parties or persons running for office. If you wonder if it’s worth your time and energy to vote, then please plan to come. Whether you feel passionate or indifferent about this year's elections, come, be inspired and encouraged, and be empowered to participate in ways that are meaningful to you that ensure your voice, along with all of our votes, count.

Rev. Lisa Garcia-Sampson
Executive Director of UU Justice NC, the Unitarian Universalist Justice Ministry of North Carolina.
Rev. Garcia-Sampson will talk about UU The Vote and the 88 North Carolina organizations she is working with through her role as executive director of UU Justice NC.
Jennifer Roberts
NC co-leader for the Carter Center’s Strengthening Democracy Project, along with former NC Supreme Court Justice Bob Orr. This initiative works with a number of coalition partners to restore faith in established democratic norms and pave the way for fair, safe and secure elections in the coming years.
In addition to these dynamic speakers, local organizations, including League of Women Voters and Red, Wine & Blue CLT, will share their efforts to promote democracy and to further voting participation. UiC's Social Justice Committee will fill us in on the efforts we have been taking as well. Unity in Community is excited to host this important event – and we want you to come and join us!

A Community Discussion of LGBTQ+ Equality.
In these times of increasing attacks on the LGBTQ+ community – through both local, state and federal policies targeting the LGBTQ+ community and violence and hate directed towards LGBTQ+ individuals, how can we show love for our neighbors, help build greater support for the LGBTQ+ community, and advance racial equity?
Join us as we learn from Reverend Sonja Lee and others in the LGBTQ+ community. Rev. Sonja Lee has had a hand in shaping churches across the Mecklenburg County area. She is Founder/Executive Director of the Lionel Lee Jr. Center for Wellness, a community health center, that continues to do groundbreaking work for some of the most underserved in our community.
All are welcome. Please come with an open heart and with the intention to learn, to grow and to be supportive of our neighbors.

Join UiC board member, Bruce McDonald, and walk a mile in solidarity with impoverished and trafficked children. Register at the event. Charlotte is the eighth worst city in America, according to an international group which monitors this travesty. Metro Charlotte is particularly bad because of a major airport and the intersection of so many major highways. In addition to JOY International, The Barefoot Mile will also benefit On Eagles Wings, a safehouse in Concord that houses and helps rehab women coming out of prostitution and children rescued from trafficking situations.
The Barefoot Mile walk is an annual event that raises money to support JOY International, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to the prevention of child trafficking and to the freedom, healing, and empowerment of trafficked children, teens, and young adults worldwide. Topic: Confederate Monuments - WHAT'S ALL THE FUSS?
Guest speaker: Dr. Hilary N. Green
What was the catalyst for the the Civil War, what was the aftermath, and what was the purpose of monuments and what is their legacy? Learning accurate history helps inform our opinions and shapes our responses. There will be time for Q&A following Dr. Green's presentation, and an opportunity for conversation in round table discussions.
Hilary Green is the James B. Duke Professor of Africana Studies at Davidson College. Her research and teaching interests include the intersections of race, class, and gender in African American history, the American Civil War and Reconstruction eras, Civil War Memory,
She is the author of Educational Reconstruction: African American Schools in the Urban South, 1865-1890 (Fordham University Press, 2016) as well as several essays and book chapters, public history publications, and scholarly blogs. She is currently writing a second book manuscript exploring how everyday African Americans remembered and commemorated the Civil War from 1863 to the present. She recently co-authored with Keith S. Herbert a NPS Historic Resource Study on History African American Schools in the South, 1865-1900 (Washington: DC: Department of the Interior, 2022) and has a forthcoming co-edited volume The Civil War and the Summer of 2020 (forthcoming Fordham University Press, 2024) with Andrew L. Slap.

Unity in Community is a diverse, community-based nonprofit organization that strives to achieve racial equity in the towns of North Mecklenburg, NC through small and large group engagement, education and activism. Together, we continue to grow in our understanding of racial issues as we study and learn through small group and large group events and activities.
